This Growing Writers™ Kindergarten Writing Curriculum includes all 10 writing units, providing a complete, developmentally appropriate writing progression for the entire school year.

Scribbling Unit: writers will explore early mark making through purposeful scribbles, lines, and shapes.

Illustration Unit: writers become confident in their drawing and coloring skills. Kindergarten students will learn how to draw with shapes and people with different facial expressions, hairstyles, and skin tones.

Labeling Unit: writers become confident in their labeling and sentence structure skills. Kindergarten students will learn how to label phonetically by listening to the sounds they hear and towards the end of the unit practice writing a sentence with their labels.

Sentence Writing Unit: writers will learn how to orally create and write a complete sentence that matches their picture. Kindergarten students will practice spacing, sentence structure, and phonetic spelling as they develop confidence writing independently.

Narrative Unit: writers will develop a story with a beginning, middle and end.

How to Unit: writers will develop the skill to write a how-to expository book through the entire writing process.

Information Unit: writers will pick a topic and write facts about the topic on each page. Kindergarten students will create a table of contents, headings, and page numbers.

Opinion Unit: writers will choose an opinion and explain their reasoning with drawings and sentences.

Fairy Tale Unit: writers will develop a fairytale story with a hero/villain, magical setting and a beginning, middle and end.

Poetry Unit: writers will be exposed to 4 different types of poetry: list, sensory, shape and couplet (rhyming).
